h20tulkit

The h20tulkit was developed based on statistical models developed using data obtained during experiments of bacterial technology for water quality remediation of river. The toolkit was part of the PhD work of A. T. Kabo-bah on the topic – Statistical Models & Toolkit for Water Quality Modelling of Polluted Rivers. The toolkit was developed using freely and open source-based support software and codes. The aim was not to reinvent the wheel, but to integrate and build on existing knowledge. The toolkit supports the understanding of the fate of five-day biological oxygen demand (BOD5), ammonium-Nitrogen (NH3-N) and total phosphorus given a set of other water quality variables such as temperature, chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen and pH. The toolkit also supports the sensitivity analysis of water quality variables on varying environmental conditions. The toolkit hence can be used to support preliminary water quality control, monitoring and management of treatment polluted rivers in China. However, the use of the toolkit is still under development to improve the performance of the models. Therefore, users’ expertise judgement of results from this toolkit are therefore advised. Therefore, the author is not liable for misuse or misinterpretation of the results from the toolkit. On a stricter note, the toolkit is meant for educational purposes only and hence any of water other use is beyond the scope of this toolkit.

OpenDinkel

Water quality modelling is an important yardstick to inform us of the spatial and temporal quality of our rivers, streams and lakes. Several models and software exist to help us accomplish this. However, often we are unable to use these existing tools as a result of extensive data requirements, costs and flexibility of modifying these tools to answer specific water quality problems. This work is a product of two Master of Sciences theses “Develop a GUI for handling water quality modelling in ILWIS Open for the 52oNorth Dinkel River” that were supported by the 52oNorth Initiative. For more details on these theses the reader is referred to (Kabo-bah, 2010; Yin, 2010). The resultant product from this work is a plug-in dubbed “OpenDinkel” in ILWIS Open. ILWIS Open is an open source and free remote sensing and GIS software supported by 52oNorth GmH Open Source Initiative. It has an extension for handling hydro-processing. This advantage makes it suitable for hydrological modelling. Therefore, the Full Equations (FEQ) model was incorporated to link up with this hydro-processing capability for performing unsteady flow studies (Yin, 2010). Since the fate and transport of solutes in rivers, streams and lakes is affected by hydro-transport activities, this implies that, FEQ model could further be coupled with a water quality model. As a result, the one-dimensional transient model with inflow and storage (OTIS) model was used.
